Technical Explanation
MPC - varnish potential - Membrane Patch Colorimetry evaluates degradation products that can be separated from the oil and collected on a membrane. It is therefore an important tool for assessing varnish potential, but it does not measure all deposits already attached to machine surfaces.
RULER - antioxidant health - RULER tracks remaining antioxidants, particularly phenolic and aminic antioxidants. As antioxidant levels decline, the oil has less protection against oxidation.
RPVOT - oxidation resistance - RPVOT evaluates the oil's ability to resist oxidation under defined test conditions. Results should be compared with the baseline for the same oil formulation rather than across different products.
Why interpret them together? - RULER may decline before MPC rises, or MPC may begin to rise while RPVOT has not yet fallen significantly. Trending several parameters alongside machine condition therefore provides a clearer picture.
Impact on Machinery
- Decisions based on one value may lead to premature oil changes
- Oil may remain in service even after antioxidant protection has declined significantly
- Rising varnish potential may be overlooked
- Treatment may be purchased even though operating conditions are the primary cause
Points to Consider
- Establish a new-oil baseline for the selected lubricant
- Trend MPC, RULER, and RPVOT instead of treating them as snapshots
- Correlate laboratory results with operating hours, temperature, and machine condition
- Use the data to decide whether to continue using, treat, or change the oil

How Can SUTAIYO and Lubefix Help?SUTAIYO can design an oil-analysis program, interpret results in relation to machine condition, and establish a baseline for Mobil turbine oil. Lubefix can treat oil that remains fit for continued service but requires contamination or varnish control, avoiding an unnecessary full-system oil change. |

Customer Benefits• Oil-treatment and oil-change decisions based on actual condition• Lower risk from keeping oil in service for too long or changing it too soon• More effective management of lubricant and maintenance costs |
