Technical Explanation
When oil flows at high velocity through piping, valves, and especially filter media, charge separation can occur between the oil and the material surface. This phenomenon is known as Electrostatic Charging. In systems where the oil has low electrical conductivity, charge may dissipate more slowly than it is generated, causing electrical potential to accumulate.
When the potential difference becomes high enough, the charge can discharge as Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). The discharge may occur inside the filter element or around nearby metal components, creating very high localized energy for a very short period.
What matters to the Maintenance Team is not the spark itself, but what it can do to the oil: create localized Thermal Stress, accelerate Oxidation, generate Carbonaceous Deposits or Degradation Products, and in some cases leave damage marks on the Filter Media.
The risk is typically associated with several factors acting together, such as Oil Conductivity, Flow Velocity, Filter Media, Filter Surface Area, Temperature, Water Content, and the oil-flow-path design. The solution should therefore not be limited to repeatedly replacing the same Element without investigating the system.
Impact on Equipment
- Oil Degradation may accelerate even when Bulk Oil Temperature appears normal.
- Deposits or residue may form around the Filter and downstream components.
- Filter Life may be shortened, or Burn/Discharge marks may appear on the Media.
- The load on Servo Valves and Control Components may increase if Degradation Products continue to accumulate.
- Oil Condition may deteriorate without a direct relationship to Particle Count.
Recommended Approach
Start by confirming whether the observed symptoms are actually related to Electrostatic Charging. Do not conclude this from discoloration or sound alone. Review Filter History, Flow Condition, Oil Conductivity/Resistivity as appropriate, Water, Temperature, and Filter Media type together.
If ESD appears to be a likely root cause, evaluate adjustments to Media, Flow, Filter Configuration, or charge-control methods, and measure the results through both Filter Condition and Oil Degradation trends after the improvement.

What Can SUTAIYO & Lubefix Do?SUTAIYO can connect Oil Condition, Filter History, and Operating Condition data to determine whether observed Filter Plugging or Deposits are related to Electrostatic Stress, while also considering Lubricant suitability, including Mobil Lubricants, for the Application. If oil or filtration-system improvement is required, Lubefix can support Filtration, Oil Conditioning, and related field work, with the goal of reducing recurring problems rather than simply replacing the Filter and restarting its service life.

Expected Customer Outcomes• Reduce the Stress that accelerates oil degradation at the root cause.• Extend Filter Life and reduce unexplained Repeat Failures.• Bring Oil Condition and system Reliability back under control.
