No Water Visible in the Sight Glass Does Not Mean the Oil Is “Dry”

Understand Dissolved, Emulsified, and Free Water before small amounts of moisture become a Reliability problem.

Technical Explanation

Water in Lubricating Oil can exist in several states: Dissolved Water dissolved in the Oil Phase, Emulsified Water dispersed as small droplets, and Free Water separated as visible droplets or a distinct layer. The proportion of each state depends on the oil type, temperature, Additives, and Saturation level.

As temperature changes, the oil's ability to hold dissolved water also changes. Oil that appears clear when hot may become cloudy or release water as it cools. Therefore, Water values in ppm should be interpreted together with temperature and oil type, rather than viewed as a number without context.

Water can support Corrosion, increase the risk of Additive Degradation in certain chemistries, reduce lubrication effectiveness, and accelerate Oxidation. In Critical systems, persistent water—even when Free Water is not visible—should not be overlooked.

Water may enter through Cooler Leakage, Steam/Process Ingress, Condensation, Breather systems, Cleaning Processes, or improper oil storage and transfer. Removing water without identifying the source will become repetitive work.

Impact on Equipment

Recommended Approach

Set a Water Target according to Lubricant type, OEM Requirements, and equipment Criticality, then track it as a Trend. When a high value is found, determine whether it is a temporary event or continuous Ingress.

The corrective approach has two parts at the same time: Remove the water and Stop the source. Technologies such as Vacuum Dehydration, Coalescing, or Centrifugal Separation should be selected according to the oil type, water quantity, and the state in which the water exists in the system.

What Can SUTAIYO & Lubefix Do?SUTAIYO can define Water-testing approaches and interpret results in relation to Lubricant and Operating Temperature, while assessing the risk to Oil Life.Lubefix can support field Water Removal and Oil Purification with Before/After Condition tracking. For systems using Mobil Lubricants, New Oil and In-service Trend data can be used as a Baseline to determine whether the system is experiencing an abnormal Water Load.

Expected Customer Outcomes• Reduce the risk of Corrosion and Bearing Damage.• Extend Oil Life by controlling Water at the source.• Reduce repeated Purification caused by an unresolved water source.
