Technical Explanation

Deposits in an Oil System can arise from several mechanisms: Oxidation Products that develop into Varnish/Sludge, Additive Dropout caused by Compatibility or Water, Carbonaceous/Coke Deposits from Thermal Stress, Rust/Corrosion Products, Process Contamination, or even Seal/Coating Material.

Visual Inspection is useful for identifying Location, Texture, and Pattern, but it should not be the final step. A thin, hard, tightly adhered Deposit may look different from Soft Sludge, but color alone cannot reliably distinguish the Chemistry.

When the impact of a Failure is high, collecting a Deposit Sample and examining it with FTIR, microscopy, or elemental techniques as appropriate can help distinguish Organic Degradation Products from Inorganic/Metallic Contamination and reduce guesswork.

Root Cause must also consider location. For example, a Deposit found only at a Hot Bearing is different from residue around a Tank Wall, Cooler, or Valve. “Where it forms” often provides as much evidence as “What it looks like.”
