When Is Oil Flushing Necessary, and When May It Be Unnecessary?

Flushing is an important tool, but it should be performed for a sound engineering reason rather than as an automatic step at every oil change.

Technical Explanation

What is the purpose of flushing? - Oil flushing removes contaminants and residues that normal oil draining cannot fully eliminate. Depending on the problem, the method may use flow, temperature, filtration, or cleaning chemistry.

Situations in which flushing should be considered - Examples include commissioning or recommissioning, a component failure that generates debris, filter collapse, filling with the wrong oil, changing to an oil with uncertain compatibility, the presence of sludge or varnish, corrosion, or paint flaking.

Situations in which flushing may be unnecessary - If the system is clean, has no deposit or varnish trend, the new oil is compatible with the existing oil, and the old oil can be drained effectively from the reservoir and low points, flushing may add unnecessary downtime, waste, and cost.

Acceptance criteria are essential - Before work begins, define the required cleanliness level, how filters will be managed, where samples will be collected, and the conditions under which the system is considered ready for operating oil.

Points to Consider

How Can SUTAIYO and Lubefix Help?SUTAIYO can determine whether flushing is necessary based on oil condition and system history, and evaluate a change to Mobil Lubricants when appropriate. Lubefix can perform oil-system flushing, oil filtration, drain-and-fill services, and oil filling while controlling cleanliness before the machine returns to service.

Customer Benefits• Lower residual contamination before start-up• A clean system for the new oil at the start of service• Avoided cost from unnecessary flushing
