Technical Explanation
Varnish is an end product of oil degradation - By the time varnish deposits become visible, the oil has already undergone degradation. Prevention must therefore focus upstream on controlling reaction accelerators such as temperature, water, air, contamination, and antioxidant depletion.
Temperature control - Heat is one of the factors that accelerates oil degradation. Reservoir temperature, supply oil temperature, bearing temperature, and hot spots should all be evaluated instead of relying on a single measurement point.
Water and contamination control - Water, dust, wear particles, and certain metals can accelerate oil degradation. Controls applied during storage, transfer, and filling therefore influence long-term oil life.
Antioxidant monitoring - Antioxidants provide a line of defense before base oil degradation accelerates. Monitoring RULER or RPVOT together with MPC helps identify changes before the condition becomes severe.

Impact on Machinery
- Varnish can return soon after treatment if the root cause remains
- Repeated corrective work increases filter, oil, and service costs
- Oil life becomes shorter than it should be
- Risk to valves, bearings, and the cooling system increases

Points to Consider
- Control temperature, water, air, and particles
- Apply contamination control from oil receiving and storage onward
- Trend antioxidant condition and varnish potential
- Select a lubricant suited to the duty cycle and thermal stress
