Technical Explanation
Residual oil remains - Turbine lubrication systems contain numerous low points, coolers, bearing housings, filter housings, and piping runs. Old oil can remain after draining and gradually mix back into the new oil after start-up.
Deposits do not leave with the drained oil - Varnish attached to the tank, valves, bearings, or piping remains even after the reservoir oil has been replaced. New oil with different solvency may gradually dissolve some of those deposits back into the oil phase.
Compatibility matters - When changing brand or formulation, consider the compatibility of the base oils and additive packages as well as the condition of the existing system. Incompatible mixing can affect deposits, foaming, or separation performance.
The root cause must also be corrected - If the original cause is a hot spot, water contamination, air ingress, high temperature, or poor cooling, the problem can return even after the oil is changed.

Impact on Machinery
- New oil may degrade sooner than expected
- Short filter life after the oil change
- Recurring servo valve or bearing symptoms
- Oil-change expenditure fails to deliver the expected result
- Shorter new-oil life because of residual contamination

Points to Consider
- Assess existing oil condition and deposits before the oil change
- Verify compatibility when changing brand or formulation
- Plan low-point draining, rinsing, or flushing as required
- Control new-oil cleanliness during filling
- Establish a new-oil baseline after commissioning and monitor early trends
