Technical Explanation

New Oil Quality and New Oil Cleanliness are different concepts. A Product can have all required chemical properties while still having a Particle Level above the Target required by the machine. Therefore, New Oil Acceptance should be aligned with the Criticality of the Application.

Contamination pathways commonly include Storage Environment, Drum Breathing, Open Transfer, Shared Hose/Pump, Dirty Coupling, or non-dedicated Containers. Every oil transfer is an opportunity for dust, moisture, and other oil types to enter the system.

An effective approach is Closed Transfer, Dedicated Equipment, an appropriate Filter Cart, and filtering the oil during Transfer/Fill until the Target Cleanliness is reached before or while it enters the machine.

Establishing a New Oil Baseline also helps distinguish whether Contamination originated from Supply/Handling or occurred after the oil entered the machine.

Hard Particles enter Servo Valves/Bearings from Day 1.
A new Filter receives a high Dirt Load immediately after the oil is added.
Commissioning Baseline reliability is reduced.
Wear Risk increases in systems with low Clearance.
The team may question Product quality even though the problem is in the Handling Process.

Recommended Approach

Define a Clean Oil Chain from receipt of the product: Storage - Transfer - Filtration - Filling - Sampling. Specify Cleanliness and Water Targets for the Application and test at a point that represents the oil that will actually enter the machine.

Transfer equipment should be identified for the oil type or used on a Dedicated basis to reduce Cross-contamination, with Quick Connects and Closed Containers used when appropriate.
