EHC Fluid Is Not Turbine Oil: Why Phosphate Ester Requires “A Different” Maintenance Approach

Electro-Hydraulic Control systems have Fluid Chemistry, Water Sensitivity, and Acid Control requirements that should not use the same logic as Mineral Turbine Oil.

Technical Explanation

Phosphate Ester Fluids are used in EHC Systems for certain types of equipment because of their Fire Resistance and Hydraulic Performance. However, this Chemistry is sensitive to Water and Hydrolysis, which can increase Acidic Degradation Products.

EHC Fluid care therefore often focuses on Acid Number/Acidity, Water, Cleanliness, Resistivity/Conductivity according to system requirements, and Fluid Degradation Indicators. Acid Control Media or Ion-exchange/adsorptive media must be selected to be Compatible with the Fluid Chemistry and the system objective.

It should not be assumed that every Resin can be used in the same way, because Resin Chemistry, Moisture Condition, Functional Group, and Operating Temperature can affect performance and Side Effects. The same applies to selecting Filters/Seals that must support Phosphate Ester.

EHC Servo Valves have low Clearance and are sensitive to both Particles and Deposits, so Fluid Chemistry and Cleanliness must be considered together rather than selecting only one.

Impact on Equipment

Recommended Approach

Create an EHC-specific Condition Program according to OEM/Fluid Supplier Requirements, separate from the Main Turbine Oil Program. Define Targets for Acidity, Water, Cleanliness, and relevant Electrical Properties.

When using Resin/Adsorbent, clearly define Capacity, Change-out Criteria, and Verification Tests, and monitor the effect on other Fluid Properties rather than looking only at TAN or a single value.

What Can SUTAIYO & Lubefix Do?SUTAIYO can separate the Strategy for Main Turbine Oil and EHC Fluid so customers do not apply a One-size-fits-all Solution, while reviewing Test Programs and Media Requirements according to Fluid Chemistry.Lubefix can support Filtration, Water/Acid Control, and Media replacement in EHC Systems according to the defined Procedure, while collecting Before/After Data to demonstrate the real system impact. For Lubrication Systems using Mobil Lubricants, the Baseline is managed separately from the EHC Fluid.

Expected Customer Outcomes• Reduce the risk of using Treatment with the wrong Chemistry.• Help maintain Servo/EHC Reliability and Fluid Condition.• Manage the Main Turbine Oil and EHC Programs according to the actual requirements of each system.
