New Oil + New Machine Does Not Automatically Mean a Clean System

Technical Explanation

A new system can contain Construction/Fabrication Debris, Welding Residue, Rust, Preservation Oil, Dust, and Assembly Contamination in Piping, Tanks, Coolers, or Components. Filling with New Oil without removing these materials can unintentionally turn the new oil into a Cleaning Fluid.

Commissioning Cleanliness must therefore begin by defining a Flushing Strategy and Acceptance Criteria linked to system Criticality. Flow, Turbulence, Temperature, and Temporary Filtration must be designed to carry contaminants out of the required areas, not merely circulate oil.

New Oil should be filtered during Transfer/Fill and a Baseline should be checked before or after entering the system according to the plan, so that the actual starting condition of the Lubricant is known. This is important for interpreting future Oil Analysis.

When changing from Preservation/Flushing Oil to Operating Oil, Compatibility and Residual Volume must be considered in the same way as an Oil Conversion in an operating system.

An abnormally high Baseline is created, making future Trends difficult to interpret.

Recommended Approach

Develop a Commissioning Lubrication Plan before oil arrives on site: Oil Acceptance, Storage, Transfer, Flushing, Temporary Filtration, Sampling Point, and Final Acceptance.

Define what “Ready to Start” means using numbers and evidence such as Target Cleanliness, Water, Visual Inspection, Filter Condition, and a Stable Trend—not merely completion of the specified circulation time.
